Correction
Part One of the article “German Imperialism and the Lie of ‘Collective Guilt’” (WV No. 893, 25 May) stated in regard to Stalin’s massive purge of the Soviet officer corps in the lead-up to World War Two: “Rokossovsky, one of the most important generals in the Soviet struggle for the liberation of Europe, had fortunately not been murdered but only transferred, and was therefore able to become active again. Even Zhukov had been purged, but he was reinstated because there were not enough officers.” In fact, K.K. Rokossovsky was imprisoned under brutal conditions in August 1937, released in March 1940 and promptly restored to military command. G.K. Zhukov, while questioned during the purges, was not himself purged.
