Correction In “Zionist Bloodbath in Gaza” (WV No. 1050, 8 August), we wrote that Hamas “in the 1970s and ’80s was promoted by Israel as a counterweight to the PLO and more left-wing Palestinian groups.” In fact, Israel supported the Islamic Association, a predecessor to Hamas, beginning in the late 1970s, and Hamas itself from its founding in 1988 until fall of the following year.
